In 1798, the people of Nidwalden fought heroically against the French troops who invaded Switzerland under General Schauenburg. Napoleon wanted to integrate Switzerland into his great power plans and the Confederates joined a centralised state. In Nidwalden, however, the clergy and the population resisted the new constitution, which they saw as a threat to God, religion and the fatherland. They refused to take the oath of allegiance and prepared for battle in the hope of receiving support from the Austrians. The battle on 9 September was fierce, and although the people of Nidwalden fought bravely, they ultimately had to admit defeat to the superior forces. Casualties on both sides were high and many Nidwalden residents, including women and children, lost their lives. The French destroyed numerous houses and churches in Nidwalden.
100 years after the end of the battle, a memorial was erected in honour of the fighters. It is located at the start of the Rotzberg in the Allweg district and is open to the public all year round.
