Placements in Nidwalden in the 20th century

In Nidwalden too, many children were unable to grow up with their families. Children of poor parents and single mothers were particularly affected by out-of-home placements. The lecture shows what a placement meant and what experiences those affected had in homes, orphanages and foster families and to what extent the poor and guardianship authorities stood up for children's rights.

Dr. Sonja Matter, project manager and co-author of the book “Gegen das Vergessen. Forced welfare measures and out-of-home placements in Nidwalden” (Stans 2024). Sonja Matter is currently director of the Historical Dictionary of Switzerland.

The event will take place at the Sust in the Grafenort manor house, admission is free (collection). The café-bar in the Sust opens at 6.45 pm. Please note: The number of places is limited - the principle of “first come, first served” applies.
