Historic buildings
A piece of the Stone Age reminds us that thousands of years ago people already lived in Nidwalden.
During a dive in 2003, a sport diver discovered conspicuous wooden piles in the lake bed near the jetty in Kehrsiten. After extensive investigations, it turned out that these were the remains of a Neolithic pile-dwelling settlement from the 4th millennium BC. This makes the pile dwellings the oldest evidence of humans in Nidwalden.

Great importance

The find is of great importance for national as well as international research. Until the time of the discovery, pile dwellings were only known in the Mitteland. The international significance of this find was further confirmed in 2011 when the settlement was recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Status today

The pile-dwelling settlement is located under water and is not visible to the naked eye. However, an information board and symbolic binoculars have been placed at the site.
