During cellar renovation work on an old warehouse near the Schifflände in Buochs, a previously hidden cellar room was discovered. The room contained portrait paintings by the well-known Buochs portrait painter Johann Melchior Wyrsch. The pictures date from the end of the 18th century. A sensational find! According to legend, the painter Melchior Wyrsch was murdered by Napoleon Bonaparte's troops in 1798 when Napoleon passed through Buochs on his conquest of Switzerland. Two of the pictures found show the French General Jean Claude Eléonore Michaud d'Arcon.
The pictures were then handed over to the municipality by Sandra Barmettler, the wife of the current owner of the house, and stored temporarily in the cellar of the municipality of Buochs until it was clear what was to happen to the pictures. One morning, when a municipal representative wanted to show the paintings to an art expert, they had disappeared.
