Monastery

The Benedictine monastery of Engelberg has characterised the history of this beautiful mountain valley since it was founded in 1120.

The heart of the monastery is the baroque monastery church with its high altarpiece and the largest organ in Switzerland. The guided tour of the monastery reveals over 900 years of history with a visit to various historical rooms in the public area. Today, around 19 monks still live and work in the monastery. The monastery runs a secondary school as well as a long and short-term grammar school, which leads to a bilingual Matura (German/English) and the International Baccalaureate (IB). Pupils of different nationalities attend the school and live here.
