Historical facts
The most widespread of these are known as "Älplerchilbi" (Älpler's fair) in the two half-cantons of Obwalden and Nidwalden. The local connection, which is particularly pronounced here, is reflected in the Älpler proverbs performed on the main square. They focus in particular on village events or poke fun at locally known people. What many Älpler and Sennenchilbenen in Central Switzerland have in common is that they are organised by societies that have emerged from centuries-old brotherhoods.
Annual highlight
A major event is the Älperchilbi in the main town, Stans. This traditionally takes place on a Sunday in October. Here, several Alpine communities come together to celebrate Thanksgiving with the people. In addition to a parade through the village, followed by funny Älpersprechauns and the popular festival catering throughout the day, there is also entertainment in the evening.
